What Is Optical Gas Imaging and Gas Detection?
Optical gas imaging (OGI) is a method used to detect fugitive emissions using thermal infrared cameras and other high-tech equipment. Fugitive emissions are unseen gas leaks that contribute to green house gasses. OGI involves uncovering leaks and unwanted gas emissions from its source, facilitating timely repairs, preventing environmental damage and protecting your workers from exposure to toxic gases.
Our gas detection services can be used across various industries and commercial establishments, including:
-
Oil and gas stations
-
Residential buildings and parking garages
-
Warehouses
-
Construction sites and gas pipelines
-
Factories and mechanical rooms
-
Chemical and gas storage facilities
-
Manufacturing and chemical processing plants
-
Natural gas well sites

How Does Optical Gas Imaging Work?
The technique works by measuring the infrared radiation passing through a volume of gas by using spectrally filtered thermal cameras to uncover invisible gas leaks. Each gas has its own spectral absorption characteristics, and many gas compounds absorb a certain range of wavelengths and infrared energy.

When targeted to a specific gas, OGI cameras can recognize this range and detect the presence of specific plumes. What typically shows up as a smoke cloud is where the energy in that wavelength is being absorbed by the gas and blocking the energy from reaching the infrared detector. Since OGI cameras visualize gas as a lack of infrared energy, they can only detect gases that absorb infrared radiation in the filtered bandpass. This means that certain noble gases such as helium, oxygen and nitrogen that don’t absorb infrared in the filtered bandpass won’t be visible.
What Gases Can It Help Detect?
The most widely used industrial gases absorb infrared energy and can be viewed with OGI without the need for you to shut down your systems. These include:
-
Most hydrocarbons like benzene, butane and methane
-
Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)
-
Carbon monoxide (CO)
-
Tracer gas and CO2 used in hydrogen-cooled generators
-
R-124 compressor leaks
